Dealing with the Dangers of Mold in Your Home

Mold in your home can easily cause health problems for your family. Itchy eyes, sneezing and coughing are immediate signs that mold is affecting your family.

More serious problems include allergic reactions, asthma attacks and serious lung damage.

Because of the nature of mold, it often goes undetected for a long time, says Lloyd of C4U Inspections. Most people don’t know mold is growing in their home right now. Lloyd provided us with an example of house he was inspecting recently. Improper ventilation installation in the attic caused mold to spread. You can see the mold in the photos below. It’s a serious health hazard that many families are not aware of.

Lloyd says he has been to houses that are so neat and clean but he has found mold the owners were not aware of. While most mold grows in places where you can’t see it, it’s mold in ductwork that poses the biggest threat to health. Owners start up their heating and wonder why they are coughing and wheezing.

Mold needs moisture, oxygen, a food source and a surface on which to grow. A heating duct or vent is the perfect environment. Moreover, while it is possible for mold to grow in the ductwork of a central heating system, it is even more common to find mold in the parts of a heating or cooling system that collect the most dust and have the highest exposure to moisture — that includes air-conditioning coils and fan housings
